Update on lung cancer screening in Europe

Overview

Taking place on 19 March, 2024, this ERS Vision Live panel discussion gave an Update on lung cancer screening in Europe.

The expert panellists discussed key areas, including:

Chairs

Dr Torsten Blum (co-chair)
Torsten is a Senior Physician at the Clinic for Pneumology at the Lungenklink Heckeshorn in Berlin, Germany. He was a member of the past German national lung cancer guideline group and coordinated the section on quality indicators. Torsten co-chaired the ERS Task Force 'The European Initiative for Quality Management in Lung Cancer Care' and is involved in the long-range planning committee of the ERS Thoracic Oncology Assembly.

Prof. Joanna Chorostowska (co-chair)

Joanna served as ERS Secretary General and is the current ERS Vice President. She is a Professor of Medicine and since 2008 has been the Scientific Director for the National Institute of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (NITLD) in Warsaw, Poland. Her clinical/scientific interest is mostly devoted to molecular biomarkers and genetic diagnostic of lung cancer (ctDNA, liquid biopsy, novel biomarkers), COPD and alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD).

Speakers

Prof. Ugo Pastorino

Ugo is the Director of the Thoracic Surgery Division at the Istituto Nazionale Tumori of Milan. His clinical research focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of primary and secondary lung cancer, use of PET scan for staging of thoracic malignancies, salvage surgery of lung metastases and mediastinal tumors, biology of lung carcinogenesis and chemoprevention of smoking-induced cancers.

Prof. Miroslav Samarzija
Miroslav is head of the leading pulmonology clinic in University Hospital Centre Zagreb, Croatia. He has made a notable and original scientific and professional contribution to the research of lung cancer, pulmonary circulation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and lung transplantation.

Dr Marie-Pierre Revel
Marie-Pierre is a Professor of Radiology at Université de Paris Cité and head of the Radiology department at Cochin hospital, APHP Centre. She is past president and honorary member of the European Society of Thoracic Imaging and has an internationally recognised expertise in thoracic imaging. She is involved in the SOLACE consortium (Strengthening the Screening of Lung Cancer in Europe) as the leader of the pilot study aimed at improving women's knowledge and participation in lung cancer screening. She is co-chair of an ERS Task Force on the management of positive lung cancer screening results.
