Abstract

Introduction: Adherence to treatment is a very important element in the control of asthma and the prevention of exacerbations.

Objective :The aim of our study is to investigate the different factors that predict inadequate adherence to treatment in asthma patients.

Method: It is a retrospective, analytical, and descriptive study on the records of 61 patients followed up for asthma at the allergology consultation of the pneumology department of the university hospital of Sous-Massa in Agadir.

Results: The mean age was 46 years, with a sex ratio (M/F) of 0.43, The main comorbidity was allergies in their different aspects, Asthma control was evaluated by the Asthma Control Test (ACT) score, 49% of patients had uncontrolled asthma, 29% had partially controlled asthma, 21% had controlled asthma. 52% of patients were considered to be non-adherent to the treatment of their asthma (32 patients). 87% of these non-adherent patients had uncontrolled or partially controlled asthma. Logistic regression showed that the non-adherence to treatment was essentially correlated in our series with the fear of dependence on treatment (p=0.045 ), the high cost of treatment (p=0.03).

Conclusion: The evaluation and investigation of all factors contributing to non-adherence to treatment must be systematically carried out at the consultation to ensure better control of asthma.
