Abstract

Introduction : Smoking is a major public health problem in the world and in Morocco. It represents one of the causes of morbidity and mortality that is accessible for prevention.

Objective: Evaluate the knowledge, behavior, and attitudes of general practitioners in the southern region of Morocco towards tobacco.

Method: It was a descriptive and cross-sectional investigation among general practitioners practicing in the private and public sectors in the southern region of Morocco. Data collection was done using a web questionnaire on the Google Forms platform.

Results: A total of 82 participants responded to the questionnaire. The sex ratio M/F was 1.73. The average age was 35 years. The prevalence of smoking among these doctors was 14.6%. All smokers were male. 92% feel concerned by the problem of smoking, the knowledge of these doctors concerning the pathology of smoking was medium, 60% interrogated the patients about their smoking habits at the consultation. In the case of a patient smoker, 36% noted the information in the medical file, 85% recommended stopping smoking, 24% offered the patient assistance in quitting smoking. 53% of these doctors had not received any education on smoking cessation assistance as part of their initial training, 12% had received this training as part of their continuing medical education.

Conclusion: The implementation of education on tobacco pathology and smoking cessation for medical students and general practitioners as part of continuing medical education will facilitate the management of this pathology.
