Abstract

Background: Sarcoidosis is a rare condition with clinical manifestations of the lung, liver, eyes, kidney, skin, heart, brain, muscles and bone. The incidence of cardiac and neurological manifestation is often underestimated.

Methods: Data from 129 individuals from the Austrian Sarcoidosis registry was analyzed by descriptive statistics. All patients underwent cardiac MRI and brain MRI for evaluation of cardiac and/or neurological manifestation of sarcoidosis.

Results: From 129 patients (mean age 46.9 years, 39.5% male) with histologically confirmed sarcoidosis, 54 patients (41.9%) were at radiological stage 1, 48 (37. 2%) at stage 2 (n=48, 37,2 %), 13 (10%) at stage 3 and 8 (6.2%) at stage 4. Brain MRI and cardiac MRI revealed an involvement in 7.8 % and in 5.4 % of cases, respectively. Involvement of the lung parenchyma, skin and eye was seen in 42,6 %, 24.8% and 16.3% respectively. Over the years, 38% of all patients received oral cortisone therapy.

Conclusion: Multi-organ involvement is still underestimated. Routine cardiac MRI or brain MRI outside the recommendation should be discussed.
