Abstract

Background: Current advances in the treatment of CF transformed CF into a chronic disease that affects an increasing number of patients in adulthood. The increase in life expectancy is accompanied by an increase in prevalence of comorbidities classically associated with CF often precocious of new comorbidities related with aging.

Objectives: Analyze the prevalence of comorbidities in adult patients with CF of our unit.

Methods: Retrospective observational study of 379 adult patients with CF. A systematic review of medical records was carried out all comorbidities were recorded by disease groups.

Results: Patients were males (55.4%) with a mean age of 37.4±11.9y. Mean age at diagnosis of CF was 13.6±15.8y. The 34.6% diagnosed with >18y and the 7.7% over 40y. Mean FEV1 at diagnosis was 74.2±27%. The most common clinical manifestations were related to lower and upper respiratory airways and digestive apparatus (mean age emergence 24-26y). A percentage of this patients also suffered comorbidities not directly related to the CFTR dysfunction (psychiatric disorders 12.5%, hematological, renal, rheumatic and immunological disorders in 4-8% of all patients with a mean age of emergence around 30y). Cardiovascular disorders were described in 5% of patients with mean age of emergence 48y.

Conclusions: In our population apart from the usual clinical manifestations of CF we observe a considerable number of comorbidities requiring medical care from an early age.
