Abstract

Introduction

Asthma may persist after menopause but may appear in peri or post menopause. The aim of our study is to study the characteristics of stable asthma in menopause and to determine women at risk of uncontrol and/or at risk of asthma after menopause according to sex hormone levels..

Materials and Methods :Prospective descriptive study. It focused on 106 postmenopausal asthmatic women and divided into 2 groups according to the onset of asthma before or after menopause. They benefited from skin tests, spirometry and a dosage of progeterone and estradiol.

Results : These asthmatics are between 45 and 70 years old with an average age of 58.39±7.32 years. They have an average body mass index (BMI) of 28.83±5.68 kg/m2. Exposure to passive smoking is found in more than half of the cases. When asthma appears after menopause (24 patients), the average BMI is 29.12±4.46.kg/m2, early menopause is found in 12.5% of cases and skin tests are positive only in 23.8% of cases. When asthma appears before menopause (82 patients) and the average BMI is 28.87 ± 5.06 kg/m2. These women went through menopause at a normal age but have diminished respiratory function. Global non-control is found in 58.5% of patients who had asthma after the menopause and in 43.9% in those whose asthma appeared before the menopause with a statistically significant difference (p=0.04). There was no significant difference in the levels of the hormones studied between the two groups. But asthma severity and lack of control are associated with significantly higher estradiol levels.
