Abstract

Background:COVID-19 pandemic has caused morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Hospital staffs have maximum exposure.

Aims & Objective: 1.To see the effect of covid vaccination on covid infection among staff in pre vaccination period June to Dec 2020 and post vaccination period Jan to Feb 2022.

2. To compare the severity and outcome in staff who acquired covid during this time.

Results:

Table1.Treatment Options and Case Severity

Wave Home Ward ICU Mild Moderate Severe Oxygen Requirement
1st 149 18 3 163 7 0 3
3rd 304 4 0 304 4 0 0

We did not find statistically significant difference between covid severity and numbers in the first ?prevaccinated and third ? post vaccinated waves. Our findings can be explained by the relative younger population in our hospital staff and the absence of comorbidities. In the first wave the low numbers are probably due to the very high level of personal protection and hygiene maintained by staff
Proactive contact tracing, isolation and contact quarantining for 14 days days was maintained in the first wave. These measures were relaxed in the third wave due to relatively low severity of illness in the third wave.

Conclusion:Covid severity was much less in younger population and those without comorbidities
In the first wave contact precautions ,use of PPE , quarantining of patients and contacts played role in preventing spread of infection. In the first wave getting infection from covid areas in the hospital was relatively rare due to high emphasis on safety.
In the third wave milder infection and vaccination provoked a less stringent policy for contact prevention and quarantining .Vaccination probably has less role to play in the younger ,fitter population as seen in our staff .
