Abstract

Introduction: The presence of symptoms of burden, anxiety and depression are common in
caregivers, however, age can influence their level of psychological involvement.

Objective:To compare levels of psychological involvement in caregivers who are in middle
adulthood and old age.

Method:Cross-sectional observational study.64 caregivers participated,whose were
divided into three groups by ages:G1(20-49 years,n=16),G2(50-59 years,n=20),G3(60-
79 years,n=25).Beck Anxiety Inventory,Beck Depression Inventory,Zarit burden scale and
Perceived self-efficacy scale in caregivers of chronically ill patients was used to evaluation.
Chi-square test was performed with SPSS v25.

Results:Caregivers presented the following characteristics(G1,G2,G3):average age 40.50(29),54.0(8),68(16)(p>0.05);sex 56% women,85% women;68% women(p<0.05). There were no statistically significant differences (p>0.05) between groups(G1,G2,G3) psychological variables:depression:minimum(81.3%,70.0%,58.3%);mild(6.3%,10.0%,29.2%);moderate(12.5%,20.0%,12.5%);anxiety:minimum(56.3%,45.0%,32.0%);mild(25.0%,25.0%,52.0%);moderate(18.8%,20.0%,12.0%),severe(0.0%,10.0%,4.0%);self-efficacy:low(50.0%,55.0%,68.0%), moderate(25.0%,35.0%,20.0%),high(25.0%,10.0%,12.0%);burden:no burden(43.8%,50.0%,36.0%),mild(43.8%,10.0%,40.0%),intense(12.5%,40.0%,24.0%).

Conclusions:Contrary to the existing literature, there are no statistically significant differences in the
severity of the psychological involvement of the caregivers depending on age(intermediate
adulthood and old age)regarding symptoms of depression, anxiety, caregiver overload and
perceived self-efficacy.However,G2 presented a clinical increment in psychological affections in moderate and severe levels of all variables.
