Introduction: Revealing reasons of start and adhering to use the of modern tobacco smoking and nicotine products (heat-not-burn tobacco devices, e-cigarettes) is crucial for building successful antismoking campaigns.

Aims: To research the motivation for using heat-not-burn tobacco devices and e-cigarettes among young people in Ukraine.

Methods: We conducted an online survey involving 203 Ukrainians in November-December 2022 during the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, which was distributed in social networks and messengers. 136 women (67%) and 67 men (33%) participated in the survey with an average age of 19.7 ± 1.7 years.

Results: Modern tobacco smoking products were used by 141 respondents (69.5%). The majority of them (113 (80,1%)) started smoking with cigarettes, the other 25 (17,7%) - with MTSP, and the rest initially used snus, snuff or hookah.

The most frequent reasons to start smoking with modern tobacco smoking products were: advice from friends - 11 answers (44.0%), supporting communication with friends - 7 answers (28.0%), and social network advertising ? 6 answers (24.0%).

The reasons to switch from traditional smoking to modern tobacco smoking products were next: the desire to reduce health burden - 34 responses (30.1%), new experience - 25 responses (22.1%), quitting smoking - 20 responses (17.7%), an option to choose unique aromas - 20 answers (17.7%).

Conclusions: The recommendation of friends is the main reason to start using heat-not-burn tobacco devices or e-cigarettes for those who have never smoked before. The main reason for switching from cigarettes to modern tobacco smoking products is the desire to decrease the harmful actions of tobacco.
