Abstract

Introduction: Covid-19 causes significant physical and mental symptoms. People with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) are particularly susceptible to exacerbations of the respiratory system from viral infections, which intensifies feelings of fear, and anxiety.

Purpose: The present study examined the validity and reliability of the measures of the Fear of Covid-19 Scale (FCV-19S) in Greek people with COPD.

Method: A sample of 35 people with COPD from the General Hospital of Kifissia "AGIOI ANARGYROI" participated the study. Construct and criterion validity were conducted as well as reliability of the measures of the FCV-19S.

Results: The exploratory factor analysis highlighted a two-factor model for the FCV-19S scale (?emotional fear? and ?physical fear?), interpreting the 71.42% of the total variability. The cross-sectional validity test showed significant (p <0.05) correlations between FCV-19s and BORG dyspnoea and Borg fatigue scales as well (r = 0.40 and r = 0.42, respectively). Very high (r = 0.95, p <0.05), and significant correlation of FCV-19s with the STAI (anxiety) score was observed. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed the STAI (anxiety) (p < 0.001) as the prediction factor of FCV-19S.  The findings showed high reliability for the ?emotional fear? (a = 0.84) and ?physical fear? (a = 0.79) factors.

Conclusions: This first study presented data on the validity and reliability for the FCV-19S in people with COPD and showed the contribution of physical and emotional factor in the fear of COVID-19.
