Abstract

Introduction: Digital peak flow meters are used by patients with asthma to monitor their condition. There is little evidence regarding patient attitudes towards this technology.

Aim: To evaluate patient attitudes towards digital peak flow monitoring of asthma.

Methods: Digital peak flow data is automatically uploaded to a mobile application which allows the patients to view trends in their peak flow. All users were sent a first survey in August 2022 and a second survey in December 2022. The responses were independently analysed by a clinician not affiliated with the company who manufactures the digital peak flow meters.

Results: 343 responses were received for the August 2022 survey. 84.5% (290/343) of patients stated that it is easy to see if their asthma is deteriorating based on their digital peak flow data. 60.1% (206/343) are comfortable using their digital peak flow meter in public, while 88.6% (304/343) are open to using other digital devices to monitor their health. 42 responses were received for the December 2022 survey. 85.4% (35/41) stated that digital peak flow monitoring is more useful for monitoring asthma than analogue monitoring. 65.9% (27/41) showed their peak flow data to a healthcare professional, and 44.4% (12/27) of healthcare professionals made a treatment change after viewing the data. 53.7% (22/41) of patients stated that usage of their digital peak flow meter after 6 months was similar to when they first used it.

Conclusions: Asthma patients view digital peak flow monitoring as a viable alternative to conventional monitoring. Research is needed to identify why usage declines with time, and to evaluate healthcare professionals? attitudes towards this technology.
