Abstract

Introduction: Smartphone apps are an effective tool in the management of patients with COPD and bronchial asthma, enabling remote monitoring, communication, self-management and patient education. However, still we do not have information about the availability of such apps in Ukraine.

Aims: To analyze the available mobile apps for Ukrainian patients with asthma and COPD in the Android marketplace.

Methods: The Google Play Store was searched in November 2022, using search terms: ?asthma?, ?bronchial asthma?, ?chronic obstructive lung disease? and ?COPD? in Ukrainian and English languages

Results: A total list of 123 apps was received after the analysis. 47 apps belonged to the category ?Medicine? and were available for downloading in Ukraine. These apps were downloaded more than 24 million times. Only 6 apps (12.8%) have a Ukrainian interface, 33 apps (70,2%) ? have an English interface and 8 apps (17,0%) ? have other languages. 44 apps (93,6%) were free of charge and 3 apps (6,4%) required payment to use. 11 apps (23,4%) were designed for healthcare workers, 25 apps (53,2%) were designed for patients (among which only 5 had a Ukrainian interface (more than 6 million downloads); 11 apps (23,4%) ? were designed for patients and healthcare workers.

Conclusions: Patients with COPD and asthma in Ukraine have access to 36 apps in the Android marketplace among which only 25 apps were designed just for the patients and only 5 are available in the Ukrainian interface. We believe that it does not meet the needs of millions of Ukrainian patients with airway diseases.
