Abstract

Background: Innovative solutions are required to develop user-centric models that may improve availability, access and uptake of PR in India.

Aim: To develop a user-centric interactive web app for PR in India.

Methods: Following the DTP, an agile intuitive user centric approach to innovation (Fig 1), the following phases were conducted: (i) Empathizing: exploring the needs of people with chronic respiratory diseases (4 focus group discussions [n=32]; survey [n=307]); (ii) Defining the scope of needs: additional literature synthesis; (iii) Ideating the solution: blue print of a culturally sensitive PR model; (iv) Prototyping the solution: creating the web app; and (v) Testing with end-users.

Results: Participants emphasised the need for culturally adapting PR and reported a preference for digitally delivered PR services (84% of survey responses). Using literature synthesis, we defined the scope to COPD and ideated a blueprint of a Yoga-integrated PR model (doi:10.1136/bmjresp-2021-000966) delivered using a web app. The prototype of the app was developed and tested with end-users; available in Marathi, Hindi and English.

Conclusion: Using the DTP we developed a user-centric interactive web app for PR in local languages and incorporating an integrated Yoga-PR model, with exercise videos and education content on demand.
