Abstract

Introduction. PTBLD presents significant burden in Central Asia as it leads to reduced quality of life, impaired exercise tolerance, anxiety and depression. PR is underutilized in the region.

Aims. To explore the acceptability of culturally adapted centre-based PR in Kyrgyzstan.

Methods. Semi-structured focus groups with people with pTBLD and interviews with PR delivers were conducted. All were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using Thematic Analysis.

Results. 24 participants were interviewed (pTBLD n=21; PR deliverers n=3). Theme 1: Challenges attending PR included weather, lack of time, routine problems (childcare, household chores) and fear around COVID-19. Theme 2: Experiences of PR components highlighted that participant found both guideline PR components (walking/cycling, strength training, education) and new cultural components (rhythmic movements, ball games, Kyrgyz traditional dance) enjoyable and beneficial. Theme 3: Suggestions for the future included more hours and frequency of sessions. Participants were motivated to continue PR at home after completing the programme.

Conclusions. Culturally adapted PR in Kyrgyzstan was viewed as important and worthwhile by people with pTBLD. Findings will support the expansion of culturally appropriate PR across Central Asia.
