Abstract

BACKGROUND

Severe asthma (SA) implies more exacerbations, worse lung function and prolonged use of glucocorticoids (GCS). Biologic treatment has provided an effective alternative therapy in these patients.

AIMS

Determine clinical features and evolution after one year of biological treatment in SA patients followed at consultation.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Retrospective observational study of patients with SA ollowed at consultation.

RESULTS

A total of n=100 patients were included for analysis, mostly females (64%). Main features are shown in Table 1.

38% were taking oral GCS prior to biological treatment.

Data of one year after the onset of biological treatment are shown in Table 2. There were an 8% improvement in FEV 1 and a 38% reduction in FeNo. 50% of patients could withdrawl oral GCS.

CONCLUSIONS

- SA patients are mostly young, non-smoking, overweight women with comorbidities that may influence disease control.

- Biological treatment leads to a marked decrease in exacerbations and hospital admissions.

- Approximately half of patients were able to withdraw oral GCS after one year with biological treatment.
