Abstract

Introduction:The aim of this study is to find out the relation between the blood eosinophil levels and the length of hospitalization, the rates of ICU transfer, re-admission in 60 days and in hospital mortality in hospitalized patients with acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD).

Methods:In this study, patients hospitalized with AECOPD between the dates 1/2015 and 5/2021 were analyzed retrospectively in a chest diseases hospital. The participants were divided into 3 groups according to their blood eosinophil level(?100/100-300/?300 cell/?L respectively).

Results:In the study 960 patients were enrolled. There were no differences regarding age, sex,BMI,LTOT,NIV,Charlson comorbidity index, FEV1%, CRP (mg/dL), antibiotic use and disease severity in-between 3 groups. There is no significantly differences of lenght of hospitalizations between the groups. Group 1 had significantly higher ICU transfer rates (7,5%, 3,8%, 2,5% respectively p=0.007).Group 3 had significantly higher re-admission rates (27,3%, 34,4%, 36,1% respectively p=0,043).Group 1 had significantly higher in hospital mortality (4,4%, 0,9%, 0,3% respectively p<0.001).

Conclusion:In this study it has been indicated that AECOPD patients with low eosinophil levels(?100 cell/?L) had higher rates of ICU transfers and higher in-hospital mortality. However, AECOPD patients with high eosinophilia, had higher re-admission rates.
