2007 - The limits to exercise in COPD: new insights from new methods

The objectives of this Research Seminar were to discuss the mechanisms limiting exercise in COPD and to explore potential and actual therapeutic interventions designed to improve exercise tolerance. The following topics were addressed:

  • Finding ways to better establish communication between chest physicians, respiratory physiologists, muscle biologists, kinesiologists, physiotherapists, nurses and nutritionists.
  • Identifying areas where new knowledge is needed with the purpose of drawing up a list of priorities for future research, as well as stimulating interdisciplinary collaborative research programmes between different centres.
  • Determining the major factors limiting exercise in individuals and identifying therapeutic interventions custom-designed for individual problems.

Speaker(s): F. Maltais (Quebec, Canada), I. Vogiatzis (Athens, Greece), P. M. A. Calverley (Liverpool, United Kingdom)
