2007 - Severe Asthma

The purpose of this Research Seminar was to bring together a group of experts and young investigators, review known data and present ongoing studies that help shed light on the mechanisms and course of severe asthma. The Research Seminar focused on the following objectives:

  • To discuss current knowledge and research on pathophysiological mechanisms, clinical heterogeneity and new management of severe asthma, and bring together physicians, scientists and research nurses involved in the field.
  • To enable young scientists and physicians from Europe to discuss with experts the potential role of inflammation and structural changes of the bronchi in the persistence and severity of asthma.
  • To point out the heterogeneity of the disease, including different phenotypes, and the crucial role of comorbidities interfering with a potential good control. The importance of a long-term follow-up with a clear strategy of action was emphasised.
