The virtual academy of lung transplantation will provide state-of-the-art knowledge on a wide array of issues regarding lung transplantation. It will include innovative and interactive sessions such as pro/con debates and workshops on challenging cases.

The academy caters to the educational needs of participants with a basic and advanced understanding of the subject. Throughout the programme, participants will gain an insight into referral criteria and selection of potential lung transplant candidates; donor organs; supply, management and selection; early and long-term management and care of lung transplant recipients; immunosuppression and its side-effects. Specific clinical and organisational issues for newly established or running lung transplant programmes will be discussed.

  • Indications for referral.
  • Selection of end stage lung disease patients for lung transplant evaluation.
  • Bridging to lung transplantation.
  • Indications and complications of extracorporeal devices as bridge to lung transplantation.
  • Donor Organ selection, supply and management (incl. marginal donors/DCD donors).
  • Ex vivo reperfusion and reconditioning.
  • Early and late complications after lung transplantation including primary graft dysfunction (PGD), acute cellular rejection (ACR), antibody mediated rejection (AMR), chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD) and non-pulmonary complications.
  • Management of immunosuppression and complications.
  • Infections: bacterial, viral and fungal.
  • Prevention and management of infectious complications.
  • Role of the multi-disciplinary team.

Learning outcomes

Participants of this course will gain in-depth knowledge on lung transplantation and be able to:

  • Understand the criteria for the referral and selection of candidates for lung transplantation.
  • Appreciate the donor shortage and ways to increase supply of donor organs including lung reperfusion and reconditioning.
  • Understand the factors necessary for the establishment of a lung transplant programme.
  • Make a diagnosis and manage early and late complications occurring after lung transplantation.
  • Know who to ask for help in any aspect of pre- or post- transplant care.
