World Prematurity Day: celebrating those who survive

World Prematurity Day: celebrating those who survive

In this short video discussion, ERS Group Secretary Dr Christopher Harris is joined by Bwambale George, a Clinical Officer at the Bwera Hospital in Uganda, to discuss the serious issue of prematurity to mark World Prematurity Day, which took place on 17 November, 2024.

In Uganda, 14 out of 1000 live births are premature, leading to high infant mortality rates. Healthcare facilities with limited resources struggle to cope with severe cases. Factors like hot weather, socio-economic issues, and cultural beliefs contribute to the problem. Families face immense financial burdens, and there is a pressing need for international support and education to improve care.
