Overview

Pulmonary rehabilitation for children reveals stark global healthcare disparities between the global North and South.

In high-income countries, comprehensive programmes offer multidisciplinary care integrating medical, physical, and psychological support. Children in low-income regions face significant barriers accessing specialised respiratory treatments as well as the additional burden of conditions such as malnutrition.

These programmes are crucial for improving respiratory muscle strength, enhancing physical functioning, and supporting overall child development. By assuming a holistic approach to the management of chronic respiratory conditions, pulmonary rehabilitation can improve quality of life, reduce hospitalisations, and mitigate long-term complications. Bridging these global gaps requires international collaboration and targeted healthcare interventions.

Educational aims

  • To provide share experiences of paediatric pulmonary rehabilitation from different perspectives (north and south).
  • To provide an overview of the current landscape of paediatric pulmonary rehabilitation, highlighting the key differences in approach and access between the global north and south.
  • To share practical insights and preliminary strategies for improving paediatric respiratory care across different global healthcare settings.

Topics:

  • Pulmonary rehabilitation in children

Target audience:

  • General practitioners
  • Paediatricians
  • Paediatric pulmonology fellows
  • Paediatric pulmonologists
  • Research nurses
  • Nurses
  • Respiratory therapists
  • Physiotherapists

Format

In this webinar, two speakers from ERS and PATS will discuss pulmonary rehabilitation in children. The webinar will be interactive by including voting questions in the presentations and by promoting an active Q&A session.

Learning outcomes

Following this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Critically compare and contrast pulmonary rehabilitation approaches for children in the global north and south, identifying key structural and resource-based differences in program structure, access and delivery.
  • Examine the impact of pulmonary rehabilitation on children's health outcomes.
  • Identify potential strategies for improving pediatric respiratory care across diverse global healthcare contexts, with a focus on practical, implementable solutions.

CME credit

An application for accreditation of this webinar has been made to the European Board for Accreditation in Pneumology (EBAP) for 1 CME credit per 1-hour attendance. If accredited, the CME credit will be granted upon attendance of at least 60 minutes during the live webinar only.

What is a webinar?

A webinar closely simulates a lecture-based teaching experience. The speaker can interact with the audience, just as in a classroom setting. During the webinar, you will be asked to share your opinion on issues related to the topic using interactive polls.

All participants will be able to hear the lecturer and see the slides throughout the presentation. As a participant you will be able to pose questions or discuss ideas with the other participants via the text chat facility and the speaker will respond to the questions via the microphone.
