Session aims
To provide an overview of cellular energy metabolism from glucose to glycogen, amino acids, mitochondria and the tricarboxylic acid cycle; to explain how nutrient regulation is closely linked to cellular behaviour; to discuss how cellular metabolism is rewired and tailored for cellular effector function, highlighting how immune cells like macrophages, structural cells like fibroblasts and epithelial cells like alveolar type II cells utilise and rely on different metabolic pathways for survival and function with a particular emphasis on pro-inflammatory activity and damage/repair responses of structural cells; to discuss how metabolic reprogramming occurs in lung fibrosis and is tightly linked to pathological mechanisms of the disease process; to discuss clinical implications and opportunities for therapy.
