Overview

This interactive journal club webinar will present 2 recent important publications on inhaled corticosteroids (ICS). ICS are a cornerstone of asthma management and also have therapeutic benefit in COPD, but their use remains complex due to variability in patient outcomes and concerns about adverse effects. Healthcare professionals require up-to-date evidence, practical insights, and strategies to apply this knowledge effectively in clinical practice.

The webinar will focus on bridging this educational gap by featuring two recent high-impact studies:

  1. Dr Chloe Bloom will present her recent publication - https://doi.org/10.1164/rccm.202402-0368OC
This explores the risk of adverse events with short term use of ICS in people with asthma
  2. Dr Anne Ioannides will present her recent publication - https://doi.org/10.1136/thorax-2024-222113
This examines whether ICS reduce major adverse cardiovascular events in people with COPD

Each study will be presented in a 15-20 minute session, followed by a moderated 20-25 minute discussion. This segment will include contributions from early-career members and invited experts, with additional support from the Chairperson to ensure a lively and comprehensive exchange of ideas.

Educational aims

  • Equip participants with evidence-based insights into ICS benefits and risks.
  • Enhance critical appraisal skills for interpreting emerging research.
  • Foster strategies for tailoring ICS therapy to individual patient needs.
  • Provide tools for engaging patients in shared decision-making.

Topics:

1. Risks and adverse effects of ICS in asthma
2. Role of ICS in COPD
3. Latest research and real-world applications:
• Insights from two recent studies on the risks and benefits of ICS
• Implications of the findings for clinical guidelines and patient care.
4. Personalised approach to ICS Use:
• Factors influencing the decision to prescribe ICS, including patient comorbidities and disease severity.
• Future directions for tailoring ICS therapies based on risk-benefit profiles.

Target audience:

  • Healthcare professionals
  • Researchers
  • Students interested in respiratory medicine, pharmacology, and clinical applications of inhaled corticosteroids.

Format

The duration of the webinar is one hour, structured as follows:

1. Introduction by the Chairperson (5 minutes)
• Overview of the theme, objectives, and speakers.
2. Presentation 1: Dr Chloe Bloom (15-20 minutes)

3. Presentation 2: Dr Anne Ionnides (15-20 minutes)
• Study: Thorax article.
4. Review and discussion (25 minutes)
• Moderated by the Chairperson:
- Contrasting perspectives from the two studies on ICS use.
- Shared themes and divergent findings.
- Practical implications for clinical decision-making.
• Invited experts and early-career members contribute their insights.

• Audience questions (time permitting)
5. Closing remarks (2 minutes)
• Summary of key takeaways and concluding thoughts by Chairperson.

Learning outcomes

Following this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the risks of high dose ICS based on the latest research.
  • Appreciate the current understanding of ICS use in COPD with regard to major adverse cardiac events
  • Discuss the real-world implications of the findings from the two featured studies.
  • Incorporate a personalised approach to ICS prescribing into clinical practice.
  • Engage in critical dialogue about evolving evidence and guidelines.

CME credit

An application for accreditation of this webinar has been made to the European Board for Accreditation in Pneumology (EBAP) for 1 CME credit per 1-hour attendance. If accredited, the CME credit will be granted upon attendance of at least 60 minutes during the live webinar only.

What is a webinar?

A webinar closely simulates a lecture-based teaching experience. The speaker can interact with the audience, just as in a classroom setting. During the webinar, you will be asked to share your opinion on issues related to the topic using interactive polls.

All participants will be able to hear the lecturer and see the slides throughout the presentation. As a participant you will be able to pose questions or discuss ideas with the other participants via the text chat facility and the speaker will respond to the questions via the microphone.
