Overview

Critically ill patients under invasive mechanical ventilation are at high risk for respiratory infections from fungus and viruses. Fungal co-infections and superinfections significantly increase mortality, while viral reactivations present a complex diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. This webinar addresses the urgent need for a practical, evidence-based approach to diagnosing and managing these overlapping infections in the ICU.

Topics:

  • Viral infection and reactivation
  • Viral reactivation in the immunocompromised host
  • Fungal superinfection in viral pneumonia
  • Diagnostics and antimicrobial stewardship in complex ICU infections

Format

One-hour webinar structured as follows:

  • Opening remarks - Introduction by Chairs (4 min)
  • Presentation 1: The Hidden Threat: Fungal co infections - Ignacio Martin-Loeches (20 min)
  • Presentation 2: When Latent Viruses Awaken: Reactivation in the Critically Ill - Leonoor Boers (20 min)
  • Panel discussion and Q&A session - moderated by Chairs (15 min)
  • Wrap-up (1 min)

Learning outcomes

Following this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify patients at high risk for fungal superinfections and viral reactivation.
  • Apply diagnostic criteria to distinguish between co-infection, superinfection, and viral reactivation.
  • Develop an integrated antimicrobial strategy for managing complex, overlapping infections in the ICU.

CME credit

An application for accreditation of this webinar has been made to the European Board for Accreditation in Pneumology (EBAP) for 1 CME credit per 1-hour attendance. If accredited, the CME credit will be granted upon attendance of at least 60 minutes during the live webinar only.

What is a webinar?

A webinar closely simulates a lecture-based teaching experience. The speaker can interact with the audience, just as in a classroom setting. During the webinar, you will be asked to share your opinion on issues related to the topic using interactive polls.

All participants will be able to hear the lecturer and see the slides throughout the presentation. As a participant you will be able to pose questions or discuss ideas with the other participants via the text chat facility and the speaker will respond to the questions via the microphone.
