Overview

There is a strong need to step back and examine CF care from a global, real-world perspective, helping professionals understand why these disparities exist and how they affect patient outcomes across childhood and adulthood. Over the past decade, CF care has been transformed by advances in diagnostics and CFTR-modulator therapies. However, these advances have not been shared equally across the world. Understanding how genetics, health systems, and economic forces intersect is essential for interpreting outcomes, designing research, and advocating for more equitable care for children and adults with CF worldwide.

Educational aims:

This webinar aims to explore global disparities in CF management by bringing together clinical experience, health economics, policy perspectives, and genetic insights. Participants will gain a clearer understanding of the forces that shape CF care beyond the clinic and think more critically about equity, access, and future directions in CF care and research.

Topics:

  • Global disparities in cystic fibrosis care across high-income countries and LMICs
  • Early diagnosis of cystic fibrosis and health-system barriers in LMICs
  • Clinical outcomes of children and adults with CF in resource-limited settings
  • Access to CFTR modulators and essential therapies worldwide
  • Economic and reimbursement barriers to CF diagnostics and CFTR modulators
  • Political, regulatory, and health-system determinants of access to CF care
  • Global diversity of CFTR mutations and implications for precision medicine
  • Strategies to reduce disparities through research, registries, and international collaboration

Format

One-hour webinar structured as follows:

  • Opening remarks - Introduction by Chairs (2 min)
  • Presentation 1: Early Diagnosis, Health Systems, and Clinical outcomes in the LMIC's - Samya Z. Nasr (14 min)
  • Presentation 2: Genetic Diversity and Precision Medicine in Cystic Fibrosis - Pierre-Régis Burgel (14 min)
  • Presentation 3: The Economics of Inequality in Cystic Fibrosis Care - Jonathan Guo (14 min)
  • Live Q&A and round table - moderated by Chairs (15 min)
  • Wrap-up (1 min)

Learning outcomes

Following this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the key economic, health-system, and policy drivers of global disparities in CF care
  • Recognise how limitations in early diagnosis and healthcare infrastructure affect clinical outcomes in LMICs
  • Explain the impact of CFTR genetic diversity on access to precision therapies
  • Assess how economic constraints and reimbursement policies influence access to CF diagnostics and CFTR modulators
  • Apply a global equity perspective when interpreting guidelines, clinical outcomes, and research data

CME credit

An application for accreditation of this webinar has been made to the European Board for Accreditation in Pneumology (EBAP) for 1 CME credit per 1-hour attendance. If accredited, the CME credit will be granted upon attendance of at least 60 minutes during the live webinar only.

What is a webinar?

A webinar closely simulates a lecture-based teaching experience. The speaker can interact with the audience, just as in a classroom setting. During the webinar, you will be asked to share your opinion on issues related to the topic using interactive polls.

All participants will be able to hear the lecturer and see the slides throughout the presentation. As a participant you will be able to pose questions or discuss ideas with the other participants via the text chat facility and the speaker will respond to the questions via the microphone.
